Drugs and Its Effects

A drug is a substance which has a discernible physiological effect when taken into the body. These chemicals change the functions of the central nervous system (CNS), providing temporary relief from mental, physical and social problems. Usage of a drug over a period of time often results in dependence and tolerance of the drug. The user experiences physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms when attempts are made to quit the drug. Tolerance refers to the increased ability of the body to tolerate the drug without ill effects. Due to drugs having the capacity to enhance performance, they are often used recreationally and abused. This leads to addiction which can potentially destroy lives. Drugs which alter behavior could be categorized as stimulants, hallucinogens and depressants. Stimulants are a class of drug which can alter the way in which someone behaves by stimulating the central nervous systems. In other words, they increase the activity of the brain resulting in increased alertness physical activity, productivity, endurance and motivation. Stimulants include amphetamines, called ‘uppers’, cocaine and nicotine. Users usually find relaxation and rest impossible and tend to have no appetite. Moreover, side effects may include muscle spasms, chest pain, nausea, and blurred vision due to an overworked heart and the subsequent high blood pressure. During World War II, stimulants were extensively used by soldiers to maintain alertness. By then, various forms of the drug were readily available such as methamphetamine. Today however, due to its side effects and addictive properties, possession and usage have been made illegal and doctor prescriptions have been significantly reduced. Hallucinogens are a class of drugs which cause an alteration in perception, thought, or mood. Examples of hallucinogens drugs include marijuana, magic mushrooms and cannabis. These drugs distort sensory perception by interfering with the activity of acetylcholine, norepinaphrine, or serotonin. Hallucinogenic drugs are among the oldest known group of drugs used for their ability to alter human perception and mood. Effects of hallucinogens include perceptual distortion, increased heart rate, nausea, weaknesses and hearing, touching and seeing things that don’t exist. The effects of hallucinogens take place within half an hour and last for several hours. Depressants are a group of drugs which temporarily diminish the function or activity of a specific part of the body or mind. Depressants are described as psychoactive drugs that slow down one’s Central Nervous System (CNS), thus they are referred to as â€Å"downers†. These types of drugs are used as prescribed medication as well as illicit substances and can be dangerous. Depressants include alcohol, barbiturates and tranquillizers. Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are the two major categories of depressants used as medicine. Benzodiazepines that are commonly used such as Diazepam (Valium) and Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) were developed as a safe alternative to barbiturates to treat insomnia and anxiety but are now a major category of abused drugs. The prolonged use of these drugs can result in tolerance. In addition, the sudden withdrawal from these drugs by habitual users may result in physical withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, nausea, headaches, weakness and blood pressure drops. This may consequently lead to a coma and or death. Drugs which alter behavior could be categorized as stimulants, hallucinogens and depressants. The use of each type of drug results in an alteration of the Central Nervous System. Stimulants tend to affect the Central Nervous System by stimulating ones brain hence altering ones behavior. Hallucinogens are known to distort one’s senses by causing changes in perception, thought, and emotion. On the other hand, depressants have the opposite effect of stimulants. Depressants tend to temporarily slow down the function or activity of a particular part of the mind or body. Although some types of these drugs are acquired legally, they are often abused.

What themes are brought out in the Szirtes’ poem and how are they expressed through the poet’s choice of diction, imagery, style and symbolizes? Like many other poems Like a black bird has a mix of different ideas that are conveyed through the various themes portrayed in the poem. Each theme is brought out by the use of a variety of literary techniques that make the poem so meaningful and enjoyable to read. A theme that is quite obvious to the reader even by the reading of the first line alone is Nature. From the beginning of the poem to the end it is revealed as a strong, fierce storm that perhaps implies the difficult times in which the characters of the poem lived in. The poet often makes use of the contrast of the colours black and white such as in the line â€Å"Like a black bird against snow† and the contrast of warmth and cold as shown in the line â€Å"For its fierceness, hoping to grow warm†. By using this contrast and also the element of personification it expresses how nature or the characters’ surrounding is out of their hands and out of control but at the same time trying to embrace itself in the situation. It is trying to convey to the feeling of warmth and security of what is happening in the poem as if by using its untamable cold to try and give warmth to the characters by becoming one with them as seen in the lines â€Å"The winter seemed to drape / Itself about him as if to apologize†. Another theme that is brought out in poem is the theme of relationships. The reader gets the impression of a close bond between the main characters of the poem being the children and their long awaited father. The poem’s slow pace, which is demonstrated by the many caesuras, symbolizes the long wait and increasing suspense the children are feeling as the father draws closer. As the poem advances a sense of security and love is displayed by the poet’s choice of words that show the children’s deep anticipation such as in the line â€Å"His face was in shadow, but we’d see it soon†. Another aspect that contributes to this feeling is the rhyme scheme of the poem. It is grouped in sets of a b a as if the first line and the last line are enclosing the middle one. This may symbolizes the children’s desire to be embraced by their father and also the father’s want to hold them once again after a long separation. Memory is also a theme that is quite important in the poem. While reading the poem the reader gets the impression that this is all just a flashback of the narrator as he remembers his childhood and this particular day. This is shown more clearly in the last two lines â€Å"And life was then in quite another form, / When there were blacker days and thicker snow†. Even the way the poem is written creates the idea of thought. Many of the caesuras used in the poem are commas as if showing a list. This portrays how thoughts and memories are linked to each other. Another aspect of the poem that shows how memories are connected is how the stanzas continue from one another. â€Å"In the cold wind, as if he had trapped The whole sky in it.† Two themes that are connected with the previous one of memory is the passage of time and nostalgia. Through out the whole poem a dark and cold atmosphere is exposed to the reader. We can image the narrator as he recalls these difficult times of his life and also get a sense of though they were hard he wishes for them to return. Maybe not the situation itself but the love and care of a family and childhood. The passage of time is also displays in the style of the poem itself. Even though there are a lot of pauses which symbolize how slow time passes when you are anxiously waiting for someone it also has many run on lines. These portray how time moves fast in the sense of years. How that memory seems so long ago and quickly time passed from that day or childhood to the time the narrator finds himself in now. Each theme shows different aspects and interpretations of the poem but combined together they form a marvelous piece of literary work full of depth and feeling.

It was during the summer vacation and I was very excited having been offered a job as a sales person. The detergent was new and I had obtained good results after using it and so I was sure that I would make many sales. In addition, the price was affordable. After a half day’s training we began the job. However, when I started the job I was disappointed to realize that I was not making as many sales as I had anticipated. This dampened my spirits a little.When the time to hand in our weekly reports came, I was discouraged to learn that others had met and even exceeded the targets while I had barely met the target. This happened for two times and after this I started feeling like I did not measure up and that I could never meet the targets. Even as I approached prospective customers, I could visualize them rejecting me and this translated to even less sales. One day I sat down and wondered why I could not meet the targets yet others could. I started telling myself that I could do it if others could.I searched the internet for tips on direct selling and started to put them into practice. All of a sudden my whole attitude changed and as I approached customers, I felt that I would make sales as I knew the tips. The most surprising thing is that people started being more enthusiastic about the detergent I was selling to them and the sales increased to a point where I became among the people who always exceeded sales targets. How can man assure himself that what he perceives to be real is aligned with what is actually real? According to a philosopher named Bertrand Russell, reality exists—an objective space where all objective objects are orderly situated. Man is able to obtain knowledge about these objects, firstly, through the experience provided by his senses; and secondly, through the judgment created by his mind on such experience. The mental concept that is constructed is thus called perception. In this light, Russell deemed that man cannot exactly grasp reality since his senses do not possess the facets that would allow for him to capture these objects completely and purely. Essentially, however, man’s inquiry toward the external world reinforces an interesting insight about his nature—the desire to know. ... Two General Worldviews about the External World As mentioned previously, man’s ultimate goal is to understand the nature of the external world not only by acquiring truths about it, but also by evaluating the mental and physical processes he employs. Boot sector viruses are a strange type of viruses. They dont infect files, but instead they infect the disk directly. But, if the disk is infected with a boot sector virus then the virus is run instead. Usually the virus will call the `real part of the disk so that it appears to run normally. So your disk will be smaller than usual even if you have no files installed. Basically it was an accident that it brought down the Internet because it was spreading to quickly for the primitive computers to handle, and just crashed them. It is worthwhile to note that online banking can be used to reduce cost for banking institution. For instance Hernandez-Murillo et al (2010) suggest that the cost of a customer doing online banking transaction, in a brick and mortar bank in the United State is about one percent of the cost of the customer using the traditional banking method. Esser (1999) reported some of the advantages of online banking to the customers. The findings were: Customers can easily manage their accounts as they can access their accounts any time of the day. The customers do not also need to visit the bank premise to request for services such checking loan rates, view their transaction history etc. Customers can set up a standing order to pay bills and can also schedule new bills or stop payment of bills, when the need arise but this is subject to availability of the internet. Specialised services such as ordering for checks, changing user profile or address can all be done through the online banking. Messages are sent to customers via encrypted email. This could not have been possible without the online banking facility. Customer satisfaction is affect by several factors that can hinder or improve the adoption of online banking by the customer. One of these important factors is personalisation, which demands politeness, courtesy, and friendliness from the employees of the bank toward the customer (Simmers et al, 2008). However, the self-service technology has made a remarkable change in the way the bank interacts with its customer (Simmers et al, 2008). Most of the researches on online banking explore the factors affecting the adoption by banks. The focus of their researches were on the usage of online banking by banks as a reaction to the adoption decisions of the industrys competitors (Hernandez-Murillo et al 2010). Hernandez-Murillo et al (2010) study the factors that determine the adoption of online banking by banks in United States during the period 2003-2006. The Multimarket Contact index was used by these researchers as a substitute of the strategic force required by banks to adopt online operations as a competitive reaction to the rivals actions. The authors results suggest that strategic consideration plays an important role in the adoption of online banking by geographically localised market. Tan and Teo (2000) base their study on studying the factors namely, attitudinal, social and behaviour control, that affect customersthe adoption of online banking in Singapore. The theories of planned behaviour and diffusion of innovations were used by the authors to evaluate their hypothesis. The authors argue that the consumers attitude, his subjective norms and his perceived behavioural control, all contributes towards his adoption of online banking. Amin (2009) examines the factors affecting the acceptance of online banking by people in Malaysia through the use of a technologically accepted model called a linear regression. He propose through the study that the qualities, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, perceived credibility and social norm were statistically important while perceived enjoyment was not important. Another factor affecting the adoption of online banking by customers is security of the account accessed through the internet. For customers to feel secure and make use of online banking, the bank must offer online security systems that protect customers assets and information (Smith, 2006). The research to examine the intensity of the impact of online banking on the financial performance of community banks carried out by Acharya et al (2008), both sampling and statistical procedures were used to build a broad online banking index. Banks have to re-examine their marketing strategies and also prompt growth in the adoption of self-service technologies (SSTs) (Loonam and OLoughlin, 2008). Very little research has explored the role of SST in a high involvement service such as that of financial investments. Customer satisfaction with banking services was researched with respect to their interaction with human and technology. It was discovered through the use of multiple regression that consumers overall satisfaction is predicted to be influenced more by human rather than technological encounter (Haytko and Simmers, 2009). While consumers show they are displeased with failure in transaction that involve a bank employee, they tend to accept responsibility for any kind of failure they come across during or after the use of online banking and may continue its usage (Haytko and Simmers, 2009). The authors through two studies both use the six-item and five-point Likert scales conclude that human encounter was initially more important than technology encounter until the convenience of banking online prevailed. The first study was carried out through the survey of some undergraduate students, with most of those that responded between age 19 and 21 years. The second study was carried out with as survey of 153 bank customers at the university, with most less the 24 years of age. The authors develop a structural equation model, called Lisrel, and through empirical test carried out on 510 internet users in India. Nowadays, being honest in business will always mean that you will get better business in the long run. Working in a team sometimes can be frustrating and unproductive, such as office politics, large number of people working in a small task, conflicts between team member, and also members with larger personalities can harm the confidence of the quieter team member. However this can be tackled by hiring the right person and good leadership. b. Edison Method Advantages One of Edison philosophy is to monotask, focus all our attention or energy to one single thing. We never can pay full attention to two jobs at once, for example when we are writing while having a conversation, we are switching our attention back and forth between those two quickly. We are juggling and when we juggle tasks, our work deteriorates and takes longer to complete because of switching tasks. So by monotasking, we can improve the quality of work and the amount of time spent. We learn more from failure rather than success. It took Edison approximately ten thousands experiments to figure out the perfect element for the electric light bulb. There was a lot of learning to go through. There is no such knowledge in books. He simply never gives up trying, failing and learning. We must actively seek out failure and learn from it. We shouldnt be afraid of getting anything wrong. Failure is our friend. Every failure is simply an experiment. Experiments are set up to see what results occur and to learn from doing them. Disadvantages Some people are good at multitasking, and they can complete tasks faster with the same quality of result. Applying monotasking on these kind of people will deteriorate their efficiency and energy. By multitasking, those energy can be fully utilized to complete tasks. We also should know when to stop, give up and move on. If we dont enjoy the job we are doing or unsatisfied, stop for a while and review it. We shouldnt be wasting our time on something we dont enjoy or feel right doing. Another example is when we are injured and we should be taking a week off and miss an important match this week, we give up that match and get well soon so that we can play on the following match. If I dont enjoy them, then I will fail or barely pass the units. Also I dont have to be the first to win. Computer has already existed when Bill Gates were born, but he was able to make the device better and bring their products to the masses than anyone else in the industry. Microsoft was simply better at executing a business plan, and thats why Microsoft software is now the industry standard. This also applies to Edison, he didnt invent the first electric light bulb, he made them perfect and produced the first commercially practical electric bulb. However there should be a clear line on where we are taking it too far and we have to stop trying. For example, I have been in love with a girl for a year, she keeps saying no when I asked her out. In this case, giving up and moving on arent bad ideas. This is for my happiness and hers. I gain experience by making mistakes. I dont drown by falling in water, I drown by staying there. Before I started writing, my teacher, Professor Geis taught the class how to write rhetorical compositions, she gave us many articles that are of good examples. We were taught in class the rhetorical strategies for persuasive compositions- the ethos, pathos and logos. I learnt that ethos means the characters in the composition, pathos means the emotions expressed by the composition and lastly logos means logic of the composition. In addition, Professor Geis discussed with us the words that people sometimes misused, for example some people would confuse the word advice and advise. In particular, I have learnt that in order to write a good essay on persuasion, I have to include the process of persuasi on in the essay in order for the audience to understand. Moreover, professor has kindly shared with us a few model essays from other students. I started by taking a time management survey. #1 Accept Problem My results from this diagnostic survey on time management assured me that my time management skills are low. The survey revealed that I am on the bottom of the scale of time management. There were two sections of the survey. One section measured your time management skills in an office setting and the other section measured your time management skill in your personal life. By having two sections you can compare your time management skills for the two different settings. The total score measures your overall time management skills and it also puts the score in a category. My scores of 27 points for personal life and 31 points for office settings combines to a 58 point total score. My combined score falls in to the lowest category that suggests that training is necessary and will considerably enhance my effectiveness. The first step of solving a problem is identifying it. After taking this survey I have proof that my time management skills are low. Time management has been a long time problem for me. I have always found excuses for not doing things on time or running late. My main excuse is being involved in so many things as a college student. All of this is true, but it shouldn’t be an excuse.
